Fed-batch culture
流加培養ryūka baiyō
A culture mode in which nutrients are added during the run, as boluses or continuously, without removing culture until harvest, so that cells reach high densities and titers. It is the standard mode for monoclonal antibody production in CHO cells. Feed timing and composition affect titer, osmolality, by-products such as lactate and ammonia, and quality attributes such as glycosylation. Japanese documents use this term and the loanword for fed-batch interchangeably. Perfusion, in which medium is exchanged continuously, is the main alternative.
