Utilities
ユーティリティyūtiritī
The systems that support manufacturing without being part of the product: pharmaceutical water, clean steam, compressed air and process gases, HVAC and similar services. Utilities that contact the product or affect the manufacturing environment are qualified and monitored like equipment, because they can carry microbial or particulate contamination into the process. In Japanese facility documents they are qualified and listed separately from process equipment, and they are part of the contamination control strategy.
