Japanese–English glossary

Yield

歩留まりbudomari

The fraction of input material that ends up as product meeting specification, for one step or the whole process. Low yield raises the cost of goods, and a failed batch adds the cost of all its materials, equipment time and labor. Batch records often state expected yield ranges per step, and a yield outside its range is investigated as a possible sign of a process problem even when the product passes testing. The Japanese word is everyday manufacturing vocabulary used across industries.
