Shimadzu has introduced the GCMS-TQ RX series of triple quadrupole gas chromatograph-mass spectrometers (GC-MS/MS). According to the trade journal Manufacturing Chemist, the series is aimed at laboratories that run routine analyses and is designed to combine analytical performance with operational flexibility. The flagship model is the GCMS-TQ8050 RX. In response to concerns over helium supply and cost, the systems can run on hydrogen or nitrogen as well as helium, and they include functions that reduce helium use.
Triple quadrupole instruments are built to quantify specific compounds accurately under fixed conditions. The first quadrupole selects only the target ion. The ion is then fragmented, and the third quadrupole looks only at one chosen fragment. This two-stage filter picks the target out of samples crowded with other compounds.
In pharmaceuticals, GC-MS/MS mainly serves three jobs. One is residual solvents, the organic solvents whose limits are set by ICH Q3C. Another is mutagenic impurities such as nitrosamines, which have to be controlled at very low concentrations. The third is volatile extractables and leachables from packaging and single-use components. Each needs a number at low concentration, not a yes or no.
Routine labs ask different things of an instrument than research labs do. They need to know how quickly it returns to a state that meets specifications after maintenance, and how system suitability is checked at each run. They need the same results when a method moves to another site or another unit. They also need data integrity: records that cannot be altered, with an audit trail.
Replacing an analyzer never ends with the purchase. Equipment qualification and method transfer come with it. For a product sold for routine analysis, the time those steps take is in practice part of the buying decision.
The report does not give detailed specifications or the launch date.
